St.Francis Assisi HSS Arthunkal
Report: 2011-2012
Under the patronage of St. Andrew’s Basilica, St. Francis Assisi Higher Secondary School, Arthunkal caters to the aspirations of the marginalized section of pristine Arthunkal. The century past institution is unique, the students and teachers of the school lead a life dedicated to curricular and co-curricular excellence.
The school ensures that the students inculcate the humane values. Management and school focused on delivering a method of education that helps the students to excel in technical, personal and academic levels.
Academic Activities
Meeting of the staff was held in the last week of March 2011 and to discuss on the projects to be implemented under the second five year plan were selected. The projects were assigned to respective teachers. Mr. Joby K Mathew was assigned the staff secretary.
Highlights of the year
 The school achieved 96% for HSS March examination.
 Allotment of new batch for computer science

 First in Diocese Costal Science Congress
SCHOOL INFRASTRUCTURE:
As was envisaged the construction of a new computer lab is taking place with financial assistance from MLA Sri. P. Thilothaman.
School’s website was initiated with site address www.arthunkalhss.com.
The school was allotted an additional batch for computer science.
The school is graceful to the SBI Arthunkal for benevolence in donation of fans to the new computer lab.

CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
Media centre:
Teachers take special effort to make best use of the facilities of the media center.
Evaluation Schemes:

In order to monitor and upgrade the academic progress of the students, monthly and terminal test are being conducted. The poor performers are encouraged to better themselves by the remedial team.
Parents’ meeting:

A meeting for the 2nd year student’s parents was held on 21st July to present the current status of their performance and the coming improvement exams.
Prayer Day:

Our teachers participated very actively, in the prayer day observed by the Corporate Management at St. Francis Xavier, Omanappuzha.
Library:

It fosters the reading habit of the students. Library books are being issued to all students every day. Mr. Paul Santhosh manages a very good library and reading room with all the major newspapers and magazines. Arthunkal village co-operative bank and Manorama Cherthala Unit sponsors Malayala Manorama for each of the thirteen classes. In tie up with THE HINDU and the INDIAN EXPRESS, students subscribe the paper at reduced rate. 10 news papers are given to each classes.
We celebrated the Vayana Dinam. Master Ouseph(+2 A) delivered a talk about the importance of reading. On July 2nd we celebrated the Vayanakkalary.
Remedial Classes:

We started taking the remedial measures early. Special attention is given to the weak students in the evening sessions. Other students are also made to sit up to 5 pm to revise their lessons.
Quiz, debate & Seminars:
A council under the leadership of Mr. Paul Santhosh conducts quiz, debates and elocutions for the students. On 13-08-2011 Jawahar Bala Janavedi conducted a quiz competition at Cherthala south. Arun A O(+2) and Praisemon Joseph(+2) got 2nd place of cash worth Rs. 500 and trophy.
On September 4, two teams participated in the Bharat Quiz Competition conducted by St. Martin Unit Cherthala. Arun A O(+2) and Jesil Jose(+1) of team 1 got Rs. 1001 cash prize, trophy and certificates. Team 2 also got fourth place.
On September 13, J.E.I. conducted an Interschool quiz competition in our school. Arun A O and Jesil Jose of our school got first prize worth of Rs.1000.
In every month we give an article for writing to all the students. Articles like Trolling, Budget, Lokpal Bill, Women empowerment, Global financial issues and its effects on Kerala economy, etc.
Communicative English:

Special emphasis is given to the learning of English. One of our special projects for the year is anglicizing the campus. As part of our cherish dream of anglicizing the campus and equipping our students to excel themselves in their future prospects, we have introduced a faculty member of ILM, Bangalore. Following a grant inauguration of the programme graced by the presence of Mr. Lalachan Arackal, HRD Manager
D C Mills and Mr. K P Issac, PRO Marari Beach. Mr. Ralph M Stanley from ILM
handles special sessions in mornings and evenings to bring out the best in the students.
Manuscript magazine:
A competition of class magazines was held under the guidance of the class teachers. Work on the school manuscript magazine is being proceeding.
Ethics Committee:
The collective effort of the teaching staff strives to maintain a tranquil atmosphere in the campus. They have grouped together the lockal community members too, to form the School Protection Group.
Co curricular activities:
Science Club
1. Ten students from each of the science classes were selected to be form the core team of the science club.
The club held a Project competition in the last week of August on a house wise basis.
2. To gear up for the forth coming Sub district Science fest, a class wise competition was held for all the items as stipulated in the science manual.
The team which won the first place was selected and groomed further by the project co-ordinator Miss.Leeja Nepolean for participation in the Diocian Costal Science Congress.
The SFAHSS team won the first place. The same team went on to participate in the Sub district Science Congress and accorded a plan among the first 5 teams of the 19 teams participate . The HSS team participated in the State Balashastra Congress held at Kollam.
Sports Council:
We give special attention to train the sports stars of our school. The students’ trains everyday till 5.30 pm after the class. We participated excellently in athletic meet held in D V HSS, Charamangalam on 1, 2 October 2011. We achieved an overall third place in the meet.
Art & Culture:
The committee on art and culture identifies and develops the artistic talents of the students. The School Arts Fest 2011 was held on 23 & 24 of September. The fest was inaugurated by Mr. Biju Allungal.
Work Experience and Social Science Fest
Sub district level
The school participated in Sub district Work Experience held at Govt.H.S.S. Thirunelloor on Nov 24,25 in 18 items of which 16 events were variously graded.8 participants were judged to participate in the Revenue district level. Of the 8 participants four students were ranked A grade and will compete in the State level competition.
The school secured -:
1. Second place in the Over All Section with 66 points.
2. Second place in On the spot competitions.
Revenue district level
The school participated in Revenue district Work Experience held at Govt.Girls H.S.S Cherthala on December 1st in 8 items of which 4 events were variously graded.
National Service Scheme:

The NSS unit is a remarkable presence that fosters social commitment among the students. The World Environment Day, Hiroshima Day, Sathbhavana Day, World Ozone Day, Gandhi Jayanthi, and N S S day (Blood group literacy programme inaugurated by Sri.Anilkumar S, Panchayath President) were also observed. NSS awareness and orientation programme to the first year volunteers(August 2- 10) Independence Day flag hoisting and rally was observed with fervent patriotism . A mini camp was held on 29th & 30st of August 2011-PROJECTS, Jalayanam- Drinking water quality test done in 10 wards of Cherthala South Panchayath, inaugurated by MLA Sri. P. Thilothaman. Krishikoottam- A small roof top vegetable garden and tapioca field has been setup as part of “School Vegetable garden Project” within the HSS campus. Clean campus programme was a great success due to the jointed effort of the NSS Volunteers. The unit celebrated Onam with great enthusiasm. On September 17th we conducted a coastal cleanup-inaugurated by Sri V. Mathew, S. I. of Police, Arthunkal. The visit to the old age home on World Elders Day on September 30th was a heart whelming experience…
The support of the management and the P T A in the activities of N S S deserves special mention.
SEED

The students actively participated in a novel initiative in collaboration with
Mathrubhumi. Priyanka Prathas (XII C) secured Second prize in the elocution
competition conducted by Seed. Seed started farming in the school campus. Seed has plans for preparing a report on the trees in the locality.
Entrepreneurship Club
The club activities try to instill social commitment and business acumen. The club has set up a shop in the campus, which functions during the working hours.
Value education & spiritual formation:

The students benefitted from a value education seminar by Fr. Binu from POC. The fourth period of each Wednesday is set apart for imparting moral &spiritual values. We zealously uphold the tradition of reciting the Holy Rosary in October, the time for which is edged out from the afternoon interval. Holy Mass is celebrated every first Friday.
A committee headed by Mrs. Suma K T provides various sessions on value education to the students as well as the teachers.
Environmental &Cleanliness Council:
We maintain a beautiful garden in front of the school ranging from colorful flowering plants to those of medicinal as well as economic value.
Tourism Club:
The tourism club of our school helps the students to realize the immense potential of this industry.
Career Guidance and Educational Counseling:

Sri. P S Ouseph, Christ College Thumboly inaugurated the activities of career guidance unit on 22nd July 2011. A career awareness seminar was also conducted on the same day. Dr. Amal and Dr. Neethu were the resource persons. Various cources, their entrance examinations and how to prepare for the examination where discussed in the seminar.
Career Day Celebration
August 1 celebrated as the career day by the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education every year. In our school we have career day message in the morning assembly. In relation to the celebration we conducted a career awareness programme for the +2 students on 6th August 2011.
A power point presentation regarding different job opportunities, courses, entrance exams and different institutions was presented for the science, commerce and humanities students separately.
Observation of important days and Celebrations:
A committee ensures that all of the auspicious days are aptly accorded with .The First year’s were given a grand welcome on 27th of June. Onam was celebrated with all traditional gaiety.
The past year was breathtakingly eventful and yet enough time was left to spare on our hands to further excel ourselves in. We firmly believe that in keeping together we move towards progress and working together we could definitely achieve success in every aspect.

Report 2010-2011

St. Francis Assisi Higher Secondary School, Arthunkal under the patronage of St. Andrew’s Basilica, caters to the aspiration of the marginalized section of pristine Arthunkal. The school provides a caring and empowering workspace, recognize talents, encourage achievements making each and evary one feel special.

Academic Activities:
A meeting of the principal and staff held on the 27th of May 2010 analyzed the 2010 March result and formulated the modus operandi for the coming academic year. Mr. S.V. Joseph continues in office as the staff secretary for the 2nd consecutive year. A motivational seminar for the teachers was held on 29th May by Mr. Madhujan. He urged all the teachers to strike a fine balance of multitasking and do their duty to a full conscience.

Sub committees were formed for the better completion of the projects.

Our former school manager Very Rev. F. Pious Arattukulam, our source of inspiration was gratefully acknowledged, for the benevolence show to us during his tenure, at the farewell meeting thrown for him on 27 May. The new school manager Very Rev. Stephan Pazampacheri presided over the first school assembly of this academic year on the reopening day, followed by an interaction with the teachers. He responded positively to the suggestions and requests made by the teachers.

The HSS made itself proud by achieving the long cherished dream of an office room by the concerted effort of the principal & PTA; the blessing of which took place on 2 June. The school sat 347 students for the HSS March Exam out of which 289 secured eligibility for higher studies totaling an 82.57% pass.

NOTABLE EVENTS

1. Retirement of Mr. P.V. Antony aftera meritorious service of 23 years.
2. Relieving of Mr. Ouseph Milton and appointment Miss. Leeja Nepolian.
3. Blessing of newly built office room.
4. First in HSS category in Theera Shasthrolsavam 2010.
5. First Overall in Sub District Work Experience, Social Science Fest, Science Fest & Mathematics Fest.
6. X’mas celebration with the family of a less privileged Humanities student.
7. Mr. Tomy K.KD. was awarded the best HSST 2009-10 by the corporate management of schools Alappuzha.

The slow learners and other needy students are free to avail the service of the teachers even after the scheduled hours. These sessions may last up to 6-6.30pm.
The Half Yearly examinations were held from 1st November.

Parents’ Meeting:

A meeting for the 2nd year student’s parents was held on 21st July to present the current status of their performance and the coming improvement exams. The 1st year and 2nd year student’s parents where held after the half yearly examinations.

Prayer Day:

Our teachers participated very actively, in the prayer day observed by the Corporate Management at Lourd Mary UPS, Vadakkal.

Library:

It fosters the reading habit of the students. Mr. Paul Santhosh manages a very good library and reading room with all the major newspapers and magazines. Guru Jewellary sponsors Malayala Manorama and Thozhil Veedhi for each of the twelve classes. In tie up with THE HINDU and the INDIAN EXPRESS students subscribe the paper at reduced rate.

Manuscript Magazine:

A competition of class magazine was held; each class meticulously put together their own class magazine under the guidance of the class teacher. The work on a school manuscript magazine under the guidance of Mrs. Wilsy Chacko bore sweet fruits by bagging the first place in the HSS Manuscript Magazine Competition.

Ethics Committee:

The collective effort of the teaching staff under the leadership of Mr. Thomas K.W. strives to maintain a tranquil atmosphere in the campus.

Co curricular activities:

Sports Council:

The special attention that we gave to train the sports tars of our school has helped the school to bag the champion’s trophy at the amateur athletic meet; Runners Up in Sub-district sports meet with 278 points and the Best School in Alleppey Revenue District Meet with 125 points and a whooping lead of 37 points with the runners up. A council under the disciplined leadership of Mr. Joby Mathew and Mr. Binu Josey takes effort to the best out of our young talents.

The school participated in 9 events in District Work Experience fest 2010 and secured first place in Budding and Grafting by Senobin Basil XIB, Second Place in Umbrella making by Anandakrishnan XIIA; Third Place in Product using palm leaves by Jolly Joy XIE and Product using screw pine leaves Arya Thankachan XIIB.

Theera Shasthrolsavam 2010

The school made itself proud by securing the first place in the HSS section. Of the various events participated in, first place was secured in Quiz, still model, Working model, Improvised models & Research project.; second place in ICT simulation, Biodiversity Register & Indigenous project; third place in Seminar.

National Service Scheme

The NSS unit is a remarkable presence that fosters social commitment among the students. A mini camp was held on 14th & 15th of August. Independence Day flag hoisting and rally was observed with fervent patriotism. The unit celebrated Onam and the Id-ul-Fithr with great enthusiasm. The world Environment Day, Antinarcotics Day, Hiroshima Day, World Ozone Day, Gandhi Jayanthi, and NSS Day were also observed. A novel project of One student One crop has been initiated which would be evaluated on a home to home basis. A small roof top vegetable garden and Tapioca field has been setup as part of “School Vegetable Garden Project” within the HSS campus which was formally inaugurated by MLA P Thilothaman. A seven day camp held during X’mas vacation was inaugurated by MLA, A.M. Arif. Highlights of the camp were visit by “Kandal Pokkudan” and Blood Group Identification campaign.

The support of the management and the PTA in the activities of NSS deserves special mention.

Value Education & Spiritual Formation:

The fourth period of each Wednesday is set apart for imparting moral & spiritual values. We zealously uphold the tradition of reciting the Holly Rosary October, the time for which is edged out from the afternoon interval. Holy Mass is celebrated every first Friday. A religious retreat was conducted on 9th & 10th of July.
A committee headed by Mrs. Suma K.T. provides various sessions on value education to the students as well as the teachers.

Environmental & Cleanliness Council:

Mrs. Judy D’sousa and term maintain a beautiful garden in front of the school.

Tourism Club:

The tourism club of our school helps the students to realize immense potential and ensuing peril (if not adeptly handled) of this industry. It observed the Tourism day on 27th of September Mr. Joby Mathew is the teacher in charge of the club. A seminar on ‘The Seven Sister of North East’ was held on 21st August lead by Rev. Fr. Thomas Arthasheril.

Career guidance and Educational Counseling:

Activities of this year were inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Stephan Pazampassery on 3/7/2010, followed by a seminar on Cyber Crimes by Cyber Cell, Alappuzha. The council organizes various training programmes and counseling. Mr. Tomy K.D. is the teacher coordinator. The unit conducts entrance oriented motivational training, P.S.C. exams preparation class, making paper carry bags, sewing class and musical instrumentation class every Saturday’s. Sr. Vineetha meets the students every Thursday, helping them to alleviate grievances.

Observation of important days and celebrations :
A committee led by Mrs. Gigi M. Micheal ensures that all of the auspicious days are aptly accorded with. The first year’s were given a grand welcome on 30th of june. Teacher’s day was celebrated on 4th of September with much gaety. The teachers were given a raucous welcome in a vibrant gathering, pressed over by Mr. Paul Prasad, retired professor of St. Micheal’s College. Onam was celebrated with all traditional gaiety. The ardor of X’mas celebration scaled greater heights when the school extended the warmth, love & spirit of the season to the family of one of our less privileged student. The staff and student spent an evening of expressive merriment and joy, engaging in games, singing songs & giving gifts to the family.
